In today's drawing tutorial, we will learn to draw a dragon step-by-step with a pencil.
Since dragons are mythical creatures, unlike dinosaur drawing, we have a lot of freedom in drawing dragons. You can add spikes, horns, draw larger head, smaller legs. However, human mind is used to seeing dragon drawings in different places, so we have to still give the dragon some realistic body shapes.
Step 1. Outline the body of the dragon drawing with basic shapes.
The drawing of the dragon starts with basic shapes, much like our dinosaurs drawing tutorials. We draw two circles for the chest and the back, a line for the back, neck, and tail of the dragon, and an oval for its head. We also draw the lines to outline the dragon's legs.
Step 2. Draw the shape of the dragon's body, head, tail, and legs.
Now, using the auxiliary shapes from the previous step, draw the body of the dragon. Then draw the dragon's head and tail. Lastly, draw the shape of its legs.
Step 3. Draw the dragon in more detail. Draw dragon's wings.
Removing auxiliary lines and shapes, draw the body, the legs, and the head of the dragon in more detail. I drew horns on the dragon's head and nose. Dragons are usually drawn with membranous wings, the type bats have. The wings are stretched between elongated fingers.
Step 4. Draw the dragon's wings. Draw the skin texture on its bottom.
In the next step of our dragon drawing tutorial, we continue to draw the wings in more detail. Then we draw a skin texture on the bottom of the dragon, looking like the bottom of the snake's body. Lastly, we draw the legs and toes with claws in more detail.
Step 5. Hatching and shading the dragon drawing. Drawing the dragon's skin texture.
You will need to spend a bit of time imagining and drawing the skin texture on the top of the dragon, its legs, and its head. You will want to alternate the size of the scales depending on their place. Then, hatch the wings of the dragon. Lastly, hatch the parts of the dragon that are shaded.
