In today's drawing tutorial, we will learn to draw an umbrella. Due to its shape, it is a pretty difficult object to draw, but we will take our usual step-by-step approach.
Step 1. Outline the shape of the umbrella and the shaft.
Start by drawing the round part of the umbrella and the shaft. First, draw the outer rim of the open umbrella. Our round part is an ellipse as we draw it from the side. Then, draw an inner circle; as you can see, we need to show the depth of the umbrella canopy, and the inner circle is shifted in position. Then, add another line on top of the outer ellipse, making the ellipse a bit off. This is because of the shape of the umbrella and our point of view on it. Lastly, you need to draw the shaft in a perpendicular position to the canopy.
Step 2. Draw the inner lines using the contours from the previous step.
Now that we have outlined our umbrella, we need to start shaping it. The umbrella has a series of ribs (the rods holding the canopy in an open position) and stretchers (which will be added in the next step). Each rib extends to the tip of the umbrella. We need to draw the ribs and the lines in between the tips. Usually, an umbrella has eight tips, meaning there are also eight ribs. Also, the shaft must be thickened, and the handle should be outlined.
Step 3. Draw the tips and ribs of an umbrella. Draw umbrella stretchers.
Continue adding lines in between the tips at the end of each rib. Then, draw the stretchers in the middle of the umbrella. Also, draw the upper part of the umbrella.
Step 4. Draw the umbrella in more detail.
At this stage, we want to add more details to our umbrella drawing, like drawing out the tips and the stretcher connectors.
Step 5. Continue to finesse our umbrella drawing.
In this step, we need to thicken the lines for ribs and stretchers and draw out the handle.
Step 6. Shading the umbrella drawing.
In the last step, we want to color or hatch the inner part of the umbrella and show its shade on the ground. You can continue to finesse the drawing from here, adding details as you wish, e.g., drawing out the handle, etc.
